Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was an outstanding Italian painter whose career was inextricably linked to Venice. Born in Palmanova, he moved to Venice in his youth, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Antonio Maria Zanetti and Costantino Cedini. Venice, with its rich artistic tradition, became a profound source of inspiration for Bison. He absorbed the influence of masters such as Canaletto and Francesco Lazzaro Guardi, which is reflected in his vedute paintings, capturing the city’s canals, squares, and architecture. Between 1798 and 1800, Bison collaborated with architect Gian Antonio Selva, adorning Palazzo Dolfin Manin with frescoes. His works are characterized by vibrant colors, masterful perspective, and a refined sense of light, making his vedute highly sought after by collectors. In addition to Venice, he worked in other cities, but it was the Venetian period that defined his style. Paintings such as “View of the Arsenal” and “The Grand Canal” are preserved in museums worldwide, underscoring his contribution to the Venetian school of painting.
